Sacred Duty: Religious Accommodation for First Responders and Entheogenic Churches – A Constitutional Approach

Diane Goldstein, Sarko Gergarian, Tarin Hale

A religious exemption to the Controlled Substance Act (RE2CSA) as a religious accommodation was extended to a working first responder for the first time in history in the United States of America. This officer will discuss the concerns and challenges that were faced as he worked to petition his chief executive and “hiring” authority to be allowed to practice his faith and religious convictions under the protection of the Constitution. Those in attendance will hear directly from the officer and his attorney as they share the story with the public for the first time.
