From Jungle to Synagogue: Experiences and Tensions Among Jewish Ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) Ayahuasca Users

Jonathan David

This talk introduces a novel cultural context for the use of ayahuasca: the Jewish Ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) community. Traditionally characterized by strict religious observance, clearly defined communal boundaries, and deep commitment to Jewish law, Haredi Jews represent a highly structured and closed social group—one not typically associated with psychedelics.Drawing on qualitative research, this lecture explores how ayahuasca is being engaged within Haredi contexts. It examines the unique setting of Haredi ayahuasca ceremonies, the motivations and personal experiences of participants, the religious outcomes induced by ayahuasca, and the complex tensions that arise as deeply monotheistic, Orthodox individuals encounter a shamanic Amazonian medicine.
