Why the Sky Hasn't Fallen: Systematic Lessons from Australia's First 100 Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy Patients

Chris Raine

On July 1st, 2023, Australia became the first country to formally regulate psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT), authorising psychiatrists to prescribe MDMA and psilocybin under tight controls. Since then, The Psychedelic Consultancy has supported over 20 psychiatrists—around 30% of the national cohort—to become Authorised Prescribers. This presentation explores the early lessons from Australia’s psychiatrist-led regulatory model: what’s worked, what hasn’t, and where it’s headed. It examines the unique responsibilities placed on psychiatrists in leading this new treatment paradigm—and how legal, clinical, and reputational risks are being managed in practice.
