The National Psychedelic Landscape -An Overview of Past, Current, and Future Policy Reform

Sam Chapman

The momentum behind psychedelic policy reform has surged over the past five years—especially within state legislatures. With over 220 bills introduced across 38 states and D.C. since 2020, the field is evolving rapidly. But sustained progress requires a clearer understanding of what’s working—and what’s not. This session draws from the National Psychedelic Landscape Assessment, the most comprehensive analysis of psychedelic legislation to date. It explores the questions shaping the future of this movement: What types of policies are being introduced—and in which political environments? Why are some bills passing while others fail? And how can we design state-based access models to be not just legal, but accessible, affordable, and scalable over time? With trends, case studies, and actionable insights, this session offers a strategic roadmap for advocates, funders, and legislators working to expand effective and equitable access to psychedelic care across the country.
