Regulating Psychedelics within the United Nations Drug Policy Framework

As global momentum builds around psychedelic reforms, the United Nations’ Common Position on Drug Policy offers a critical framework for shaping a humane, rights-based approach to this issue on the international stage. This panel will explore how the UN’s focus on public health, human rights, and sustainable development can support decriminalization efforts, while aligning with the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Drawing from case studies and international best practices, the panelists will highlight how UN bodies, member states, and civil society can collaboratively engage to explore regulatory pathways that respect Indigenous knowledge systems, protect vulnerable communities, and promote equitable access to psychedelic-assisted therapies. Topics will include the alignment of psychedelic decriminalization with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in health, human rights, and social equity, as well as the challenges and opportunities within the context of current UN conventions on narcotic and psychotropic substances. Drawing from case studies and international best practices, this keynote will highlight how UN bodies, member states, and civil society can collaboratively engage to explore regulatory pathways that respect Indigenous knowledge systems, protect vulnerable communities, and promote equitable access to psychedelic-assisted therapies.
