Community-Based Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy for Firefighters with PTSD: A Prospective Observational Study

Pam Kryskow

This study examines the efficacy of a community-based psychedelic-assisted therapy program for firefighters suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The Roots To Thrive non-profit organization has developed an innovative approach that integrates Western therapeutic practices with Indigenous wisdom, employing a “Two-Eyed Seeing” methodology. This holistic framework emphasizes the importance of relationships, connections, and Indigenous ways of knowing in the healing process. The research focuses on ketamine-assisted therapy (KAT) as a potential breakthrough treatment for mental health conditions that have shown resistance to standard therapeutics and pharmacological interventions. The study follows 8 firefighters through the Roots To Thrive KAT program, assessing clinical outcomes and overall efficacy. This community-based research model offers several advantages over traditional clinical trials, including enhanced real-world applicability, improved participant engagement, and greater cultural sensitivity. By creating a culturally-informed model that respects local traditions and needs, Roots To Thrive has established itself as a center of excellence in psychedelic-assisted therapy. The study’s findings suggest clinically significant improvements among participants, providing further evidence for the potential of psychedelic-assisted therapies as first-line treatments for PTSD and related mental health challenges in high-risk populations such as firefighters. This research contributes to the growing body of evidence supporting the integration of psychedelic-assisted therapies into mainstream mental health care, particularly for treatment-resistant conditions. The results of this study may have implications for health care policy, insurance coverage, and the development of culturally appropriate mental health and wellness programs tailored to unique community contexts.
