Bridging the Fields of Psychology and Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy

Joseph McCowan, Mia Sarno, Psy.D., Jessica Punzo

Psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT) is advancing rapidly, yet psychologists—experts in ethics, assessment, and human consciousness—have not been central in shaping its development. To bridge this gap, this initiative fosters collaboration between the field of PAT and the American Psychological Association (APA), ensuring psychologists play a key role in the safe, ethical, and effective implementation of these treatments. This project includes a survey of psychologists’ perspectives on PAT, a series of free Continuing Education (CE) webinars throughout 2025, and a publicly accessible PAT toolkit for clinicians and clients. A follow-up survey will assess shifts in attitudes and knowledge. At Psychedelic Science 2025, panelists will share preliminary findings, invite critical dialogue, and propose a call to action for psychologists to actively engage in PAT’s future. This effort aligns with the APA’s principles of science, practice, and public interest, fostering a bridge between psychology and the expanding world of PAT.
