Beyond the Individual: Exploring Psychedelic-Assisted Couples Therapy

Chandra Khalifian, Anne Wagner, Ph.D., Kayla Knopp, Susan McBride

Emerging research suggests psychedelic-assisted therapy may be uniquely suited to address intimate relationship distress—an often overlooked but critical contributor to mental and physical health. This panel brings together pioneering clinicians and researchers working with MDMA, ketamine, and psilocybin in the context of couple-based interventions across clinical trials, community clinics, and naturalistic settings. Presenters will share findings from groundbreaking studies with military veterans and their partners, ketamine-assisted Imago group therapy, and crossover designs involving MDMA-assisted Cognitive Behavioral Conjoint Therapy (CBCT) for PTSD.The discussion will explore how psychedelics enhance empathy, openness, and emotional regulation—factors central to healthy relational functioning—and present new frameworks for integrating these medicines into couples therapy. Additionally, the panel will highlight tools for relational integration work across diverse substances and treatment models. Together, these perspectives illuminate a new frontier in psychedelic medicine focused not just on individual healing, but on the relational ecosystems that sustain well-being.
