Building ethical training programs presents challenges and responsibilities. UC Berkeley’s Psychedelic Facilitation Certificate Program trained three diverse cohorts of psychedelic professionals between 2022 and 2025. Faculty Director and Professor of Education, Dr. Tina Trujillo, will share the process of building a program focused on ethical relationships with people, plants and fungi, and the Earth. Program Staff Director Moana Meadow will describe the importance of integrating spiritual care principles and experiential education. Public health doctoral candidate Marlena Robbins, a former graduate student researcher for the program, will share insights from her evaluation work and ethnographic observations, offering a perspective informed by both research and lived experience on how university-based programs navigate Indigenous engagement and ethical accountability. We highlight the importance of integrating marginalized communities, including Indigenous teachers, learners, and mentors, as well as incorporating participant feedback through responsive curriculum development. Bridging diverse professional and cultural perspectives builds the foundation for ethical relationships in the context of psychedelic facilitation training.
